What Causes Depression?

Depression can be triggered by a life crisis or physical illness, but it can also develop over time and/or occur spontaneously. Mood disorders like depression tend to run in families, be caused by trauma, and emerge during difficult life circumstances or major life changes. They also affect the way your brain works and cause the chemical composition of your mind and body to change.

People who struggle with depression often have other medical conditions, as well, or develop depression as a side effect of a medication they are taking. Certain illnesses, like hypothyroidism, can also mimic depression. Further, depression is frequently linked to substance use disorders; 21% of adults battle addiction and depression together in a conditions known as a co-occurring disorder.

To effectively treat depression, you will need to focus on the source and function of the depression. .

At Tapestry, we understand that depressive disorders have multiple sources, so we focus our personalized treatment plans on comprehensive, in depth, individualized care.

How Do I Know If I’m Depressed?

A depressive disorder affects everyone differently, but you will probably notice changes to your mood, thinking, and behavior. Most people seek treatment after experiencing a depressive episode or a period of time where their symptoms are unbearable and/or interfere with their daily life.

Common symptoms of depression include:

  • Loss of interest in all activities
  • Lack of enjoyment in hobbies
  • A persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
  • Changes in appetite
  • Insomnia or oversleeping
  • Changes in weight or relationship with food
  • Feeling slowed down or agitated
  • Fatigue
  • Hopelessness
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Physical aches and pains
  • Suicidal thoughts or intentions

A depressive episode can make it impossible for you to get out of bed and even take away your will to live.

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms above, the Tapestry team can help.

Common Forms of Depression

Major Depressive Disorder

Often referred to as depression, major depressive disorder is a fairly common and serious mental illness characterized by a persistently severe low mood. Not only does major depressive disorder impact the way you feel, but it also negatively affects the way you think and act and can also cause physical issues.

Though symptoms may vary depending on the severity of the condition, they typically include:

  • Feeling intense sadness or a feeling of impending doom
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Changes in appetite
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Suicidal thoughts

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by dramatic shifts in the affected person’s mood, energy, and thinking patterns. Typically, bipolar disorder causes extreme high and low moods, which are called mania and depression.

During manic episodes, a bipolar person may experience an elevated mood that continues to increase to an uncontrollable level. During mania, the affected person may experience impaired judgment and become more likely to make impulsive and reckless decisions.

Depressive episodes are often debilitating for those affected by bipolar disorder. Everyday activities like making minor decisions, bathing, and trying to get enough sleep can be overwhelming.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression typically triggered during the fall and winter when there is less sunlight. SAD is caused by a biochemical hormonal imbalance in the brain that is offset due to shortened daylight hours during the colder months.

While other depression symptoms are also prevalent, it is very common for those affected by SAD to experience fatigue. Rather than losing sleep, the affected person will most likely be sleeping more often than usual.
